                                                  CORROSION

Our topic for PBL is corrosion. Our science teacher explained what is corrosion. Corrosion is the deterioration of a metal as a result of chemical reaction between it with the environment. Our teacher gave an activity for studying about corrosion. Madam divided the students into 4 groups. The group leaders of each group were Ashwin.V.Menon, Archana Jayakumar, Adithya Shivaram and Lisa Merin Johney, Every group consists of 10 members.
PROCESS - We were asked to bring the materials for activity. Each group brought one iron nail. Madam provided each group with one-one boiling tube. All 4 groups were given 4 topics. For 1st group it was given ‘without air’ for the 2nd group it was ‘pure water’ and for the next group it was given ‘water without air ‘ and for the 4th group it was given ‘saline water’. The next day we all were called to the chemistry lab. Each group prepared their solutions in the boiling tubes and then get the results we kept the solutions under observation for 18 days. Every day 2-3 members of each group with their group leader went to the chemistry lab for the observation of nail and the solution. In the beginning we observed that nail in saline water had a large amount of iron deposit on it and also the nail in water had a little amount of iron deposit on it. The iron nails in the other boiling tubes which contained of ‘water without air’ and ‘without air’ and water had no changes. Day-by-day the amount of iron deposits increased in the nails except the nail which was in the boiling tube that contained without air. In the boiling tubes of ‘saline water’ and ‘without air’ the colour of the solution also changed, which was becoming darker black day-by-day. The nails in the saline water was expanding in the size because of iron deposited over it and a little amount of iron deposits were also formed at the bottom of the boiling tubes. As a result or conclusion we found that without water or moisture corrosion doesn’t take place in any cases. Meanwhile during the days of observation we also made a log book describing the observation and what we did each day. In the last day of activity, group leaders of each group made a chart and they described about the corrosion that took place in each boiling tube to the students. By this we completed our activity:
From this we study environmental conditions will affect the process corrosion.
